Following a suspension for gambling, Nicolo Fagioli, a midfielder for both Juventus of Serie A and the Italy national team, is expected to make a comeback to the field.
On May 20, Juventus will play in Bologna in their first matchup since the ban. Fagiolo will be in the starting lineup.
In late August, the inquiry into Fagioli's gambling activities was first launched. To track him down and learn more about his betting activities, including whether he used illicit platforms or bet on football games, authorities launched investigative investigations.
He was initially going to have to pay a sizable fine in addition to possibly facing a three-year football ban.
Ultimately, though, Fagioli was given a 12-month suspension, which could be reduced if certain requirements were fulfilled (which, in the end, they were). This included spending a minimum of six months in treatment for gambling addiction. Following several recent football suspensions for gambling-related offenses, Fagioli's return was announced.
For instance, Ivan Toney of Brentford was suspended for eight months from the game last year due to similar bet violations. He was also hit with a £50,000 ($63,000) fine in addition to the ban. Tooney acknowledged committing 232 infractions of the Football Association's (FA) betting regulations.
